Storytelling for Week 2: Benji and Claud

Benjamin had reached his last straw. The seniors had done enough pranks on him to leave a serious dent in his self perception and confidence. If that wasn't enough, his girlfriend Ricki decided, "she needed to find out who she was on her own" and broke up with him. This seemed ironic when Benji saw her making out with another guy in the hall the next week.

It was at this time that Benji decided to get a pet. He thought about getting a lizard but decided against it since their food could be a source of insomnia. He saw a video of a baby pig and thought it was cute but they turned out to be too expensive. When he went to the pet store and browsed through the stacked cages of artificial environments he noticed a rather odd looking animal. He sat there looking at its sad eyes and wondered if he felt dejected and lonely like him. It turned out to be a fennec fox and because he was not selling the store gave him to Benji for nearly nothing. Benji named him Claud because he thought it would be a funny name to yell.

He was a great listener.

Benji grew close to Claud during high school and people knew that if they saw Benji Claud was most likely to be following behind diligently like a faithful friend. They had fun together and Claud actually made Benji a happier person. As a senior Benji and Claud were voted most likely to get married, which was actually supposed to be a prank but Benji thought it was actually pretty funny. It also made Benji sad because he knew he would have to leave Claud at home when he went to college a few hours away because they didn't allow pets, especially foxes, in the dorms or surrounding apartment complexes.

Their last night together they did all of their favorite things. They went to the river to swim and cool off before eating dinner at Red Robin as that was Claud's favorite bird to eat. Then they went and made fun of the fishes in the aquarium and played peek-a-boo with the dolphins. Then they went home to relax on the couch and watch Meerkat Manor on animal planet. Benji was about to crash when Claud sat up and looked him straight in the eye balls and said, "Please don't be alarmed, Benji I think you are a great friend and because you have treated me so well I need to tell you something". Benji sat there motionless with his jaw touching the floor. Claud said rather calmly, "I am a unique fox not because I can talk but because I have the power to grant wishes for humans". After Benji regained his composure he explained to Claud, "Since I am going to college it would be nice if I could be part of the popular crowd and to have more friends". Claud agreed he could help him with that and it came true once Benji got to college.

Him and his friends sat front row at the football games.

Benji and Claud started to become more distant as Benji grew up and experienced school in a different way then he had ever imagined. When Benji would come home to visit family and Claud he seemed to only do because he knew if he treated Claud well he could get him to grant him a wish. At first Benji asked for things like a girlfriend and a photographic memory. Eventually he started asking for things like the trendiest clothes, the most unique house right on campus, a vehicle that could also be used to go camping with, and to get set up with a job right out of college that paid big and required little effort.

Claud began to see what was going on but as a pet he was not allowed to intervene, he was only allowed to support his owner to the best of his abilities. Once Benji became an adult he continued this process of exploiting Claud for his wishes and seeking out whatever new pleasure he could dream up. It wasn't until Benji began to suffer from anxiety and extreme sadness again that he realized how he had been living. He realized he had been wasting his life on things and selfish desires that were without true meaning and purpose. He felt sick to his stomach as he thought about all the wasted time. It was at the age of 45 that Benji finally realized what he valued the most in his life. The people he had the deepest relationships with and his fox Claud were what really made him happy. He told Claud what he had been thinking about and Claud smiled as tears rolled down his cheeks. It was the happiest day in Claud's life and he got to spend it with his best friend again.

Author's Note:

The story that inspired this story was called "The Fairy Frog". In the original story a man's parents are about to die and their dying wish is to have their son go to the market after they die and buy the first thing someone asks him to buy. They told him that if he does he will find good fortune from that purchase and that no price should stop him. He does as he is told and he ends up getting a frog. The frog is unique because it eats so much and gets so big it becomes a giant frog. The frog eats so much that the man and his wife have barely any food to eat themselves and are struggling to survive but they stay diligent. Due tot their loving nature the frog reveals to them that he is actually a fairy and because of them treating him so well they can both be granted one wish. In my story I wanted to make it a little bit more realistic and relatable for college students. I believe there is this illusion of success in our world and it has a lot to do with our world's capitalistic mindset. People believe they can feel happy and find purpose in being the most unique person or being the best at something. I think it is easy for people to be mislead and I hope this story makes people think about what success is to them and about relationships. I didn't know that you could have a pet fox, especially one as cute as that, so I made him the animal in the story and gave him human characteristics.

  1. Wow! I thought this was a very sweet story! There were two specific parts that really grabbed my attention. First, I loved when you talked about the day the two spent together doing their favorite things. This part made me feel like I was right there with them! You used very good detail that allowed me to paint a picture of the scene in my head. Second, I loved how you ended your story. When I saw that Benji had a change of heart, it put a huge smile on my face. This was a very well written story! It made me want to be best friends with Benji and Claud (and it also made me wish that I had a pet fox haha).
I wonder what would have happened if Benji wouldn’t have had a change in heart? Do you think Claud would have been loyal to him or do you think he would have eventually left and gone his own way?

  2. This story was beautiful! I was already hooked when I read the first sentence! I could tell that there was already tension within Benji. I felt really bad when his girlfriend broke up with him, but then ended up hooking up with another guy later in the week (Benji deserves better anyway). It was unique that you chose a fennec fox as the magical creature and best pal for Benji. It made me laugh when Claud began to talk. I was shocked! It was a surprising twist to the story. What made you choose a fox? I like how your story can relate to students in college today. How I wish that I had photographic memory and trendy clothes! But it's true that materialistic items will not bring genuine happiness. His relationship with his fox reminds me of my dogs. Except my dogs don't talk or grant me any wishes but I still love them! I'm happy that in the end, Benji realized what was really important in his life.

  3. Steve,

What an interesting story I must say! Some of these classic fables can sound pretty outrageous at times, but they all seem to teach some really important morals or life lessons; I think that is why I enjoy reading them so much. Your adaptation reminds me of the story of Buddha. He traveled all through life searching for something that was right in front of him the whole time. It took a lifetime of sin and wrongness for him to finally change his ways and find true spiritual enlightenment. Your story is very similar; it took Benji 45 years of wishing to realize what he truly wanted all along, family and friends. Great post!

  4. I actually really enjoyed this story! You made me laugh on multiple occasions! One, I would totally name a pet Claud, because you are right, it would be really fun to call out! This story honestly reminded me of the book, The Giving Tree. It was one of my favorite stories as a kid, so reading your story even though it was about another fable story was bringing me back home - kind of like the end of your story as well! As college students we forget what is important in life and I like that you made him realize his purpose. I enjoyed it!!

  5. Wow! This story was so interesting, I really enjoyed reading it because It has many life lessons and very good moral. It seems that you are an amazing writer and you know what are you doing and how to grab the reader’s attention and make him enjoy that story from the first sentences until the end. I liked your choice when you choose the fox to be part of your story and I liked the details that you have in your story which allowed me to imagine the whole scene. Great job!

  6. This story is great! I really enjoyed it, all the way through the end. The images you used did a great job both supporting the story and providing visuals to help me imagine what was happening at the point in the story. I thought the ending was great, and love stories that end with teaching a lesson! It is obvious you are a great writer, and I look forward to reading more of your work as the semester goes forward!

  7. This was such an interesting story! I had never read "The Fairy Frog" before, so this plot was all new to me. I have always thought fennec foxes were so cute and unique-looking, so I love that this story was focused on such a unique creature!
I loved that Claud brought Benji a faithfulness in a friend that he hadn't yet gotten to appreciate. Though, it did make me sad that Benji's high school experience was filled with loneliness and embarrassment.
What if Benji had gotten to bring Claud to college with him? I wonder if Benji still would have gotten caught up in all the superficiality that came with his wishes.
I'm glad the story ended with Benji's realization of the more important things in life, but it made me sad to think he 'wasted' much of his life being caught up in those material things and wishes.
Overall, wow! Great story with a very unique plot and set of characters.

  8. I really connected to your story when your character was lonely, which made him want a pet. Whenever I am upset I instantly want a dog. There is just something amazing about a pet who will love you unconditionally and immediately make you happy. I really found it great that he found a sad looking animal and knew that they could make each other happy. I wonder what kind of a unique pet store would have a fennec fox for sale.. they are such unique animals but they are very cute! I wonder how Claud got his powers and I wish there was a little more background story on him. It was so sudden that we find out about his powers and I wish that was a more complex moment in the story. Overall great story and a great lesson. I think a lot of people need to be reminded to think about what it important in life than the little things.
