Introduction to a Michigander

Hello everyone! My name is Steve Behm and I am a fifth year senior hear at the wonderful University of Oklahoma. I started out unsure of what major I wanted to do but finally decided on a degree in health and exercise science and I actually just got accepted into physical therapy school at the University of Michigan, which will begin this upcoming fall.

I am originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan but I have been able to move around a bit playing hockey over the years. After high school instead of going to college I played hockey for a junior hockey team in Frisco, Texas. While playing there I was able to visit the University of Oklahoma and was able to realize its beauty and uniqueness. A year later a former teammate of mine and I decided we would apply to come to OU. In retrospect it was somewhat of a hasty choice but it turned out to be such a great decision. I was even able to continue to play hockey here at the university, which taught me a lot of life lessons along with being an awesome competitive outlet for me. My younger brother and sister now both go to OU as well so it has been really fun getting to have the opportunity to go to school together. I am the oldest of my siblings, however, both my sister and I will be graduating at the same time. My brother is a freshmen and he has been playing hockey here too.

Here is me playing at OU.

As far as hobbies and interests go I have a few. I have been snowboarding for a long time and have spent a lot of spring breaks in Colorado and Montana with my family and friends. I like all water sports and always feel at home in the water. I grew up spending a lot of time on lakes in Michigan and especially Lake Michigan. Lately, I would say my favorite water sport has been wake surfing where you surf the wake behind a boat, the bigger the wake the better. I also consider myself a doodler and enjoy drawing as a source of creative expression and stress relief. I enjoy playing most sports, lately I have been trying to get into tennis and racquet ball. If anyone has ever played platform tennis I was able to do that over winter break for the first time and thought it was a lot of fun. I would consider myself somewhat of a bookworm, although it can prove to be difficult to read for pleasure while in school. I am not really a music snob but I would say I don't listen to country music often. My favorite two articles of clothing to wear are socks and sweatshirts. I think its weird when people wear socks to bed.

Since it is my senior year I was hoping it would be a little bit more relaxed academically. However, last semester I would say was my hardest semester thus far in college. I took the GRE and was also applying to physical therapy school so I can relate to all of you that are trying to go to some sort of graduate school. Even though it has been a harder year so far it has still been great and I have gotten to meet a lot of new people that are in a similar boat. It is a lot easier to spend hours in the library when you have some friends doing it with you.

I am involved with Younglife here in Norman and became a leader two years ago. This past summer I was able to work at one of the summer camps in British Columbia, Canada. I was one of the boat drivers so I got to teach high school aged kids how to wakeboard and waterski, and we also got to take them on those banana tube rides. It was one of the best months of my life and I am really grateful to have gotten to spend it in the place I did. The best part about it was getting to volunteer with a whole crew of college aged people and get to know each other while making sure high schoolers had a good time at camp. This is a picture I took after we hiked up here one morning.

This is known as "Inspiration Point" and Malibu Club Camp is below.

This is one of the inlets we drove the boats in.

If anyone ever gets a chance to visit British Columbia I would highly recommend doing so. It was one of the most beautiful places I have been to. The camp was right on the ocean on the west coast and the mountains and wilderness are breathtaking.

I also have a dog Bo but he lives back at home in Michigan with my parents. He is an awesome guy and actually has quite the personality. He is not a big dog but he thinks he is huge. We have a big backyard at home and he just patrols it most days trying to kill squirrels and woodchucks.

  1. Hey Steve! That's so cool that you were a hockey player! That's a pretty violent sport. Did you ever get slammed into the plastic window? I just always see those typical hockey scenes in shows and movies so I had to ask. That's awesome that you'll be going to PT school! I heard that it's competitive to get into physical therapy, but you can do it!

The view from Inspiration Point is absolutely breathtaking. Wow. I can't stop staring at it. I need to make a trip there and take in nature's beauty for myself!

  2. Steve,
We have a lot in common just by reading through your Introduction post; I too will be a fifth year senior (4 1/2 year technically). I have snowboarded since I was 14 at least, my Dad lives really close to Frisco (McKinney) so I am in that area a lot, one of my good friends used to play hockey, and I absolutely love Colorado. I have snowboarded in many different places there like Keystone and Breckenridge; snowboarding is one thing that brings a lot of true happiness to my life. I have never been to British Columbia but from the way it sounds, I would love it there; it has been added on my list of places to go.

  4. Oh, how cool that you are a hockey player, Steve! There was a student in this class last semester who was really into hockey: she used hockey characters for a lot of the stories she wrote, including one of the stories in her Storybook. If you are curious, take a look here: "Why'd You Do Me Like That?!" ... and with your British Columbia experience, I bet you will enjoy the Native American stories, with several of the units from the northern U.S. and from the Pacific Northwest in particular — fabulous stories from a beautiful part of the world. I hope you will enjoy he class!

  5. Hi Steve! That’s so great that you were a hockey player! That is absolutely amazing because I know how much this sport is hard and it is one of the extreme sports. I really hope you enter the physical therapy school next year and be a very successful physical therapist. It is so amazing to visit British Columbia; your pictures made me really want to go there and enjoy this wonderful view. I wish I can visit this place one day. Thank you for sharing these pictures.

  6. Hey Steve! First I wanted to say, that picture you posted is gorgeous! Your story of how you got here is neat, and even though it may have been a hasty decision I am glad that it has all worked out so well. I started out as a health and exercise science major, so I am familiar with the degree path. I wish you the best of luck as you try to become a physical therapist, that is a great job field!

  7. Hi, Steve! I think it's awesome you want to be a physical therapist. I've had to go to physical therapy before for a knee injury and I always loved my PTs and could not have healed properly without their help!
That's so cool you're from Michigan, I've never been there before. I have been to Frisco, TX, however! My parents absolutely love watching hockey so I've been to a couple Dallas Stars games!
Good luck with your last semester at OU!

  8. Hey Steve! That's so cool that you've been able to go to school with your siblings! My brother and I have the same major here at OU, so we've even been able to take some classes together, so I know first-hand how fun it can be! Your pictures of British Columbia are beautiful. Canada is such a fun and diverse place. I can't imagine how nice a whole month there would be!

  9. Hello Steve! I'm from Carrollton, not far from Frisco! I'm glad you've been able to keep up with hockey through all the moving and college, that is a great passion to keep alive. I also think it is really cool that you work with the camps. Those pictures are absolutely beautiful! I hope you have a great last semester and I look forward to playing your works.

  10. Hi Steve,
I really enjoyed getting to know you through your introduction post! I like how you gave so much information about all of the different things you do! One thing I was wondering about is, what did you find unique about the University of Oklahoma? I agree that it is, so I'm not doubting you! I just always like hearing what people have to say because the answers are usually so different!

I also think its cool that you're from Michigan! I went to Ohio one time and actually visited Lake Erie while I was there. I was really blown away by how massive it was, and from my understanding it is actually one of the smaller Great Lakes. Being from Texas, I thought I knew what a big lake was but I was totally wrong.

I hope your semester is a bit more relaxed like you're hoping and that you have a great last couple classes here at OU! Physical Therapy school sounds super difficult to get into, so my fingers are crossed for you that all goes well!

  11. Hey Steve, first of all I love your pictures. I have been to Whitefish Montana several times, as my cousin and his wife used to live out there and it is absolutely beautiful. I haven't tried snowboarding, I started skiing just three years ago and have finally mastered it so I might move onto boarding here pretty soon. Like you, I am a fifth year senior taking a final victory lap! It has been a good ride but I think I am ready to move on from school.....kind of, but we'll see if I say the same thing a year from now haha. I really enjoyed reading your intro!

  12. Steve! Hello there, young man!

I enjoyed reading your introduction, sounds like you've gotten to do a lot of very interesting things over the past few years. I'm sure you have a different perspective since you spent your time right out of highs school, playing hockey with a team. It's great that you were able to come to an institution and earn your degree! I wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors and that you're able to get into PT school!

  13. Hey Steve,

Sounds like you have a lot of varied interests! I feel like most people who are into science aren't also "bookworms," but i guess you got lucky! I'm minoring in health and exercise science, so I know a LITTLE about your major. haha. My fiancé was applying to med school and is now applying to dental school, so I know how crazy that can be. Good luck! Sounds like you have some good extracurriculars for your application, though.

That camp looks uh-MAY-zing! We're trying to figure out where to honeymoon, so now I'm definitely going to research British Columbia...that picture is awesome! Did you take it, or did you find it online?

I'm a bookworm myself (and a professional writing major, so it's practically a requirement), and I know it can be hard to read for fun when you've got so much not-fun reading to do. :p I hope you find the time!

    Nice to meet you,

    -Chandler

  14. Hey Steve! I am so jealous of your experience with water sports! I have been rafting once in New Mexico and it was a blast. I will definitely be trying to find other outlets. I too am an HES major and applying to Physical Therapy school this upcoming fall! Good luck getting in and I hope you have a great last semester!

  15. Hi Steve! That's so cool that you were able to work at a camp in British Columbia! The picture doesn't even look real! I hope to make it to Canada sometime really soon! My family was talking about going to Vancouver this summer, so I'm really hoping that we do! Being a senior is rough sometimes, between either applying for jobs or applying to grad school. It's cool that you're going to PT school though! Snowboarding is one of my favorite hobbies. I actually tried skiing this past winter and thought it was difficult because I wasn't used to having my feet on separate board things. Good luck with the rest of your semester and I hope it's easier than last!

  16. Hello. Your trip to British Columbia sounds like it was amazing! I am super jealous. I am planning a trip to Canada this summer and look forward to it. I also snowboard. Unfortunately this winter was the first since I started boarding that I was not able to go. I grew up in Idaho about 15 minutes from Grand Targhee Ski Restore. I was out in the hill every weekend!
Good luck on physical therapy school!

  17. Hi Steve! I think Health and Exercise Science is a super interesting major. I thought about persuing that degree, but ended up going with petroleum engineering instead. I have a couple good friends that grew up playing hockey. I think that is so cool that you were able to do that through college here at OU. I bet that is a lot of fun.

  18. Hey Steve! Congratulations on getting accepted into Physical Therapy school! I know that’s a very competitive program to get into! I’m also a health and exercise science major, but I’m hoping to get into Physician Assistant school once I graduate. I’m jealous you’re done studying for and taking the GRE… I’m planning on taking it in May and am very nervous about it! Your dog Bo looks super cute by the way. My dog Zoe loves to chase and kill squirrels as well! I hope you have a great rest of the year!

  19. Hi Steve! It's nice to meet another fifth year senior! Before coming to OU, I also went to a junior college. However, I have never played hockey, which is one sport I would love to try!
Congrats on getting in to PA school! I have several friends PA school and they absolutely love it!
I think it's neat you were able to attend school with both of your siblings. My youngest brother and I were able to go to OU together for at least a year. Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  20. Hi Steve! I really enjoyed reading your Introduction since I have not met many people from Michigan! I can't imagine what it would be like to move so far from Michigan to Oklahoma. How many hours is the drive from there to Norman?

I also really enjoy water sports and love being in the lake. I'm from Fort Worth, Texas and there are several lakes around there so a lot of my friends have lake houses! I have always loved going to the lake and hanging out on the boats!

I hope you have a great rest of your semester and good luck in physical therapy school!

  21. Hi Steve! Nice to meet you! Wow thats awesome that you are from Michigan! I have always wanted to visit but never have had the chance! I think that is awesome that you play hockey at OU. That is the one sport that we do not cheer at and I think it would be fun to at least sit in the stands and watch and support! Godo luck with your future plans and the rest of the semester!

  22. Steve, this is the first time I have read your introduction and I absolutely loved it! I am sure glad that you decided to come to OU. I think Oklahoma is a pretty neat place so I am glad that you got to experience it. I laughed when you said “I think it is weird when people wear socks to bed” because I couldn’t agree more. British Columbia looks breathtaking and I hope to visit there one day. You seem like a very well rounded individual. It is a bummer that you are moving to Michigan in a few months! I would have offered to challenge you in a game of platform tennis (my friends tell me I am really good.) I hope you have a great last month here. Oklahoma will miss you!

  23. Hi Steve! Congrats on getting into Physical Therapy school. I like that you took a little time off between high school and college to do something you love so much. I didn't realize that OU had a hockey team. You learn something new everyday. I totally agree about the wearing socks to bed. Hope you enjoy your last few weeks here in Oklahoma.

  24. Hey Steve,

First of all, congratulations on getting into Physical Therapy school! Mostly because it is a different path than most, but I think it was great that you took a year off to really gather your thoughts and figure out what you wanted to do before going to college. I wanted to get out to a hockey game this season, but never got the chance. Anyways, good luck with everything!

  25. It’s really cool that you’re from Grand Rapids. I went up to Grand Rapids last summer with a friend of mine. She has a sister who lives up there. I was only there for a few days because we had to go to DC but it was so pretty up there. It’s cool that your siblings go here as well.

  26. Hey Steve! I commented on your introduction at the beginning of the semester and it is neat to be able to go back and look at that. I hope you have had a great semester, I have enjoyed keeping up with your storybook! I don't know if you did any hockey this semester, but if you did I hope that went well. Good luck on your finals!
